Erykah Badu sparkles, brighter t - Ed hardy underw

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Slinking through numbers like Eartha Kitt as Catwoman, Badu concentrated much the night's performance on her pair of "New Amerykah" releases but favored the audience with plenty of gems. From the Giorgio Moroder-esque dance number "I Want You" to "Appletree" and "Love of My Life," Badu kept people moving and swaying. The hip-hop-flavored showstopper "Back in the Day" proved her old-school chops as she rapped bits from Whodini, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh and N.W.A. She followed with a cover of Outkast's "Liberation."

Self-referential, poignant, outlandish and strikingly beautiful, Badu commanded the stage. Under musical director R.C. Williams Jr., she waltzed through her music with the confidence of an accomplished jazz artist, improvising around the form of her recorded work. There was occasional dissonance — whether scatting or tapping on her Roland drum machine — but she segued effortlessly from one number to the next, quoting her own music (often, with "On and On") and others', circling back into a new song.

Badu closed the show at midnight with "Soldier" and wowed with her 2000 hit, "Bag Lady," though she did not perform her recent singles "Window Seat" and "Turn Me Away" because of time constraints. Regardless, at almost two hours in,Ed hardy underwear, Badu gave it her all.

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – Clad in a black trench coat and top hat, Erykah Badu stood before the sold-out crowd at New York's Roseland Ballroom on Monday crooning the atmospheric opener "20 Feet Tall." With four backup singers and a seven-piece band to accompany her, Badu was a smoldering torch who warmed and glowed as the night went on.

She is the epic sum of her influences, and the appropriation of many is her art. The starchild of Marvin Gaye and Pink Floyd, Prince and N.W.A., Billie Holiday and Laurie Anderson. Erykah Badu is a singular artist; she might just be out of her mind, but the woman can sing.

And she's a giver. "This is bigger than the government!" she sang on "The Healer" to resounding cheers. Badu worked the crowd, and the band — with a wave of her hand she stopped the music, frequently — and captivated during "Me" with her soft yet powerful voice. Her assertion early on in the show, "I'm an analog girl in a digital world!" might explain her self-perception and attitude, but it resonated with the room.

Her style owes more to jazz than that unfortunate moniker "Queen of Neo-Soul" as she incorporated danceable funk, gospel, R&B rhythm,Coach, hip-hop and rap textured with ambitious aural soundscapes throughout. No single term applies to her music.

She burned through "Out My Mind, Just in Time," which is also the name of this tour, supporting her March release "New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh." The song served as a theme for the evening as she sang, "I'd lie for you and cry for you … I gotta do my love for you."

Country singer McCready out of hospital in Fla. -

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Mindy McCready, the country singer who battled drugs and legal woes but recently declared herself clean after a stint on "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew," was back home Tuesday from the hospital, according to her brother, after police responded to an overdose call at a Florida home.

She is well-known these days for a troubled life filled with domestic abuse, drug and DUI arrests and a suicide attempt.

"I’m happy just with the little things right now, just the smallest little thing that turns out well, I’m happy for it," McCready said. "I’m grateful. I am so grateful to still be here, to be getting a second chance or a third or a fifth or whatever it is now."

Her brother, Josh McCready called the reports a big misunderstanding.

McCready, 34, gained stardom in 1996 with a No. 1 hit, "Guys Do It All The Time," and a double-platinum album, "Ten Thousand Angels."

In July 2007, she was accused of scuffling with her mother and resisting arrest at her mother’s home in Florida. She was sentenced to jail for 60 days for a probation violation and released; she served 30 days in jail. She also lost custody of her son.

"She is in good condition," Krieger said.

On the show she said she suffered from love addiction, not substance abuse. In one of the show’s scarier moments, McCready suffered a seizure and was rushed to a hospital where scans showed brain damage.

The overdose report came at 10:38 a.m. at a North Fort Myers Coogi  home, said the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The property is owned by McCready’s mother, records showed.

McCready recently released a new album, "I’m Still Here," and fought the release of a sex tape in which she reportedly talked about former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, with whom she had an affair as a teenager.

McCready told the syndicated TV show "Inside Edition" that she Coogi  broke off her relationship with Clemens when he wouldn’t marry her. She told the news magazine they met in a karaoke bar, but their relationship didn’t turn sexual until several years later.

"I’m Still Here" debuted at No. 71, but didn’t return her to the top of the charts. Still McCready said she felt great during an interview with The Associated Press in April in Nashville. She had a new boyfriend, music producer and musician David Wilson, and was pursuing deals for her own reality show and a new tell-all book.

"She’s an easy person to like and to care about and we hope she does well," Pinsky said. "So far so good as far as I can tell."

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a Nashville hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

During this year’s "Celebrity Rehab 3," McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, with Dr. Drew Pinsky — the show’s host — calling her an angel in the season finale.

Pinsky said he and McCready have stayed in regular contact since filming the show last fall and he said in an interview last month that the singer appeared to be doing well.

In an e-mail, McCready’s publicist confirmed the singer was in the hospital, and said the diagnosis has not been confirmed.

"She is fine and back at home with my mother. It was by far Coogi  over a huge exaggeration," he said in an e-mailed statement.

"The family asks for your respect of their privacy and appreciates your thoughts and prayers at this time," wrote publicist Kat Atwood.

McCready, however, told the New York Daily News she didn’t want to marry Clemens.

Cape Coral Hospital spokeswoman Karen Krieger would not say why McCready was taken to the hospital.

Underground Cuban rappers live on the edge -

Monday, May 17th, 2010

"Los Aldeanos" was formed in 2003 by Aldo Rodriguez and elementary school teacher Bian Rodriguez.

They rap about prostitution, police harassment, social inequality and corruption, delicate issues rarely raised by Cuban musicians in the socialist state born of Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution.

In a hopeful sign things may be opening up, the government allowed them to perform their first concert in a Havana theater on April 24 to mark their seventh anniversary.

But with no income from record sales or concerts in Cuba, theirs is a labor of love.

REVOLUTIONARY RAPPERS

"I’m not going to turn my back on reality, even if they censor and repress me," he chants to a driving beat, as the eager audience, which knows every word, sings along.

The group’s name means "The Villagers" and refers to their vision of a unified and supportive Cuban society.

The rappers have become the abrasive voice of a disaffected generation of politically numbed Cubans who grew up during Cuba’s post-Soviet economic crisis of the 1990s.

WORD OF MOUTH

But rappers of "Los Aldeanos" say their music is actually revolutionary, and they criticized those Cubans who become critical only after reaching the safe shores of Miami.

Colombian rock star Juanes wanted them at a huge outdoor concert he held last year in Havana but the government refused. Puerto Rican hip hop heavyweights Calle 13 tried unsuccessfully to sneak them on stage during their Havana show last month.

"Los Aldeanos are the result of a pact to do the rebellious music we wanted. We wanted to say what we feel, what we see, without limits," says Aldo, who has a huge tattoo saying "Rap is war" on his right forearm.

Their fans are mainly young people who revel in the outlaw nature of their shows and their politically risque lyrics.

Entry was tightly controlled by police and state security agents were inside the theater, but 1,000 fans attended the show and hundreds more had to be turned away.

If their official reception at home is cool, overseas Los Aldeanos are being warmly embraced. Like most Cubans they have little access to Internet, but their music is all over the Web and a recent homemade video got almost 500,000 hits.

While critical of society, Aldo says the group’s music seeks to restore the solidarity and respect Cubans had before they were worn away by decades of economic hardship.

The rappers, who have been denied permits to travel abroad, now have invitations to perform in Colombia, Mexico and Spain, and they hope to be allowed to go this time.

"Days go by and I’m still locked up, censored. They look at Ed hardy silk scarves me like a renowned dissident, rejected by the media."

A man with dreadlocks steps up, microphone in hand, to the roar of approval from a crowd of 150 fans.

"You can’t imagine all we have been through to get here tonight," Aldo told the cheering crowd.

"They talk about our reality. That’s why we like them," says Pablo, a 20-year old musician wearing a black T-shirt hand painted with the band’s name.

"I wouldn’t be a revolutionary man if I didn’t say what I think when asked," said Aldo. "Why do I have to be afraid to express what I feel? Shutting up means freezing in time."

But things could be changing.

Cuba’s communist authorities say their anti-establishment songs are too critical and cannot be played on Cuban radio stations, that are all state-run, or sold in the shops.

The official Cuban news agency AIN recently accused them of "hypercriticism" and being the latest tool of Cuba’s foes.

"Our work aims at a positive change in society. Not just in the government, but also spiritually … today Cubans step on and humiliate one another," he told Reuters in a recent interview.

Some of their music is sold overseas through online sites, with the proceeds going to buy equipment, said their U.S.-based producer Melisa Riviere, president of Ed hardy silk scarves Emetrece Productions.

The band has no access to Cuba’s record labels either. Their 20 albums were recorded in a friend’s makeshift studio a long bus ride and a two-mile walk from downtown Havana.

(Editing by Jeff Franks and Anthony Boadle)

Barred from access to state media, their fans hear about their performances by word of mouth or text messages sent from cell phone to cell phone.

HAVANA (Reuters) – It’s almost midnight at a roadside bar Ed hardy silk scarves on the outskirts of Havana and young Cubans gather to listen to hip hop.

Riviere said Cuba’s authorities have realized Los Aldeanos are a reflection of the island’s culture and it would be better to give the popular group some slack.

"Los Aldeanos are YouTube kings. They are audio-visually pirated throughout the globe," says producer Riviere.

The two-man Cuban rap group "Los Aldeanos" can sell songs on iTunes to followers abroad, but in Cuba they remain an underground band that has been playing mostly unadvertised gigs at unauthorized venues for seven years.

"Our enemies make no distinction between mercenaries and naive, irresponsible people who disagree. Anyone is good as long as they sing the counterrevolutionary music," it said.

cheap abercrombie Capsule reviews `Iron Man 2′ an

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Capsule reviews of films opening this week:

"Casino Jack and the United States of Money" — The latest from Academy Award-winning documentary director Alex Gibney exposes the clutching, clawing venality of lobbyist-turned-prison-lodger Jack Abramoff and his cronies. It’s infuriating stuff, Abramoff’s arrogance symbolic of the I’m-getting-mine-and-then-some recklessness of our times. Through archival footage and interviews with former Abramoff associates, the film presents a detailed account of the man’s rise to supreme Washington influence peddler, living the high life off the millions he charged Indian gaming interests and corporations looking to buy favor with the nation’s leaders. Like any good story, the film has surprises and thrills, laughs and absurdities, heroes and loads of villains. The story will leave you disturbed and disgusted, though, and a bit overwhelmed by the amount of information Gibney packs in, his exhaustive portrait of Abramoff eventually becoming exhausting. You’ll come away feeling a little smarter but glad that it’s over. R for some language. 118 min. Three stars out of four.

Lots of things get blown up and torn apart in "Iron Man 2," as you would expect from any self-respecting blockbuster kicking off the summer movie season. The magnitude of destruction far exceeds that of its predecessor and includes repeated instances of characters walking away from a massive fireball without looking back. ‘Cause looking back is for wimps. But that’s not all that gets obliterated here. The substance of the original "Iron Man," the brain and the soul that set it apart from the typical seasonal fare and made it one of the best films of 2008, also have been blown to bits. Tony Stark had purpose back then, and despite the outlandish fantasy of his Marvel Comics-inspired story, as a person he had a believable arc. Here, he’s purely arrogant once more, with some glimmers of mortality and daddy issues. And Robert Downey Jr., so irresistibly verbal and quick on his feet in the first film (and in pretty much every film he’s ever made), seems to be on autopilot. Sure, he’s got a way with a one-liner, and his comic timing is indisputable, but he’s done this song-and-dance routine before and seems rather bored with it. Then again the character — and the sequel itself — are less defined this time. Narratively, "Iron Man 2" is a mess. Director Jon Favreau, working from a script by Justin Theroux, throws in too many subplots, too many characters. Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson are among the crowded supporting cast. PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. Rock Republic 124 min. 2-D only. Two stars out of four.

"Babies&quot, cheap abercrombie; — A clear line will be drawn in the sand — or the Rock Republic sandbox, if you will — when it comes to the way people respond to "Babies." If you’ve never had one or you’re not into them — if the sound of cooing sends chills down your spine and the idea of changing a diaper turns your stomach — then you’re unlikely to be moved by this documentary that follows four babies from around the world, starting with birth and ending with their first steps. Be warned, the cute factor is high. But if you’re already a mom or dad — or especially a new mother — you’ll be moved nearly to tears by the beauty of the film’s universality, by moments that are so artful and intimate, they’ll make you wonder how it’s possible that any family would let a filmmaker in so close to shoot them. French director Thomas Balmes brings us the daily ins and outs, from mundane moments to Rock Republic milestones, of four infants living disparate lives in Namibia, Tokyo, San Francisco and Mongolia. He does this without narration, without marking the passage of time or even subtitles to clarify what’s being said. It’s a bold storytelling approach: Balmes runs the risk of alienating his audience members, the vast majority of whom won’t be able to understand what’s being said. "Babies" also frequently lacks momentum because there’s no strong narrative drive, just an easy, casual stroll from baby to baby. PG for cultural and maternal nudity throughout. 82 min. Three stars out of four.

Fake Abercrombie Fitch Model shift Could older be

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Costa won’t commit, saying he does embrace newness. But, he adds, that doesn’t have to be synonymous with youth.

"The age and thinness thing go hand-in-hand,&quot,Fake Abercrombie Fitch; Kolb says.

Still, Nian Fish, creative director at fashion-show powerhouse producer KCD, says designers, stylists, casting agents and modeling agents all collectively heeded the call to put forth a healthier image.

Costa hired gray-haired Kristen McMenamy, who also appeared at Viktor & Rolf, as well as ’90s sensations — and now mothers — Stella Tennant and Kirsty Hume.

"People were interested in the known faces on the runway," she says. "We’ve all been working for such a long time, and the more you walk, the Christian Dior  more you work, the more confidence you have. You can relax, smile more, add personality. You walk the way the clothes need to be shown."

"The woman who puts my clothes on needs a certain level of sophistication," says Costa. "We wanted to acknowledge women who have always worn our clothes, women with their own identities, have full lives, have kids."

Will McMenamy and her gray hair be back, too?

The more mature look was on-trend with the chic, retro styles shown for fall, so helping models’ health may be icing on the maybe-not-entirely-fat-free cake.

NEW YORK – Among the more avant-garde looks shown on the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan was one that seems ho-hum in real life: gray hair.

Fish says she hopes the younger girls do come back — with many more years of work in front of them. "This is all going to snowball now. Once these few key designers do this, it snowballs and it makes it OK for everyone else to do."

"She promised in the next year, she’d grow curves — and she did," Razek says.

"I had been away from fashion shows seven or eight years, other than Victoria’s Secret," says Ambrosio, who also walked for Giles Deacon. "It was really nice to participate. It was surprising because, for such a long time, designers were only using girls that weren’t so sexy, whose bodies were less curvy."

More mature models — some even in their, gasp, 40s — Christian Dior  were stars at the previews of fall styles. And in the fashion world, that’s a radical turn from the use of models not old enough to drive a car, let alone wield a credit card.

This season, girls of 13 or 14 were told this season to come back when they were a bit older, says KCD’s Fish. And other models who looked unhealthy were advised to take the season off but with an open pledge to embrace them when they return after getting treatment.

"These runways looked great," agrees Fish. "Our eyes adjusted very quickly because we wanted it to. Everything looked fresh and new. Seeing clothes on post-pubescent bodies didn’t look fresh."

The first time he met Chanel Iman, she was already considered an It Girl in the fashion world, starting on the runways at 15. But she was too scrawny and young, Razek recalls. Now at age 20 she has a lucrative Victoria’s Secret contract.

The CFDA’s voluntary wellness guidelines link age and health, even if they don’t set specific standards, says Steven Kolb, the organization’s executive director. There are standing recommendations that models under 16 not be hired and those under 18 not work past midnight and have supervision, rest and regular meals.

It was a coup for her to be cast, she says, but it also helped score public interest in the shows.

"Kate Moss has grown up," he says. "Now she’s the woman I wish to wear my clothes."

It also may help counter perennial complaints about skinny models. It’s said that age brings wisdom; it also usually brings curves.

It’s a smart move by the fashion industry to make itself more relatable to consumers. Costa acknowledges that the tough retail climate has helped force design houses to speak more directly to their customers.

The current controversy about models’ weight actually goes back to the early ’90s and the days of Kate Moss, her waif body and a look dubbed "heroin chic." But the conversation turned to age at a panel discussion earlier this year where Kroes, 25, and Coco Rocha, all of 21, both said they weren’t getting much runway work because of their age and curvier figures.

Marc Jacobs, widely considered the most influential American designer, cast 47-year-old Elle Macpherson in his Louis Vuitton show, along with Bar Refaeli and Alessandra Ambrosio. Trendsetting Miuccia Prada used Ambrosio, Isabeli Fontana, Doutzen Kroes and Christian Dior   Miranda Kerr — all best known as voluptuous Victoria’s Secret models and all in their mid-20s, a relatively advanced age for runway models.

The reaction to Costa’s more womanly look — a shift from the house’s usual almost androgynous muse — has been very positive, he notes. "You can see a Kristen McMenamy wearing the clothes. You can see a woman who’s so cool, but her hair is so real — it’s amazing," he says.

"I wanted something different," said Francisco Costa, creative director for the Calvin Klein Collection. "I wanted a cast that really represented a customer I design for, and that’s not really a 16-year-old."

"This is fashion coupled with compassion," says Fish, Christian Dior  who helped the Council of Fashion Designers of America launch its health initiative back in 2007. "But I think the compassion came first, and then the fashion suited these bodies. I loved seeing these bodies in Prada. We’re always looking for trends at Prada, and seeing Victoria’s Secret girls on the Prada runway woke up a lot of people about what a women should look like."

Older models have had far more success in print, where 41-year-old Christy Turlington and 39-year-old Claudia Schiffer, for example, still star in top-tier campaigns. But while ads have always been specifically crafted to sell something, the runway had been about fantasy.

Ed Razek, president of Victoria’s Secret, is amused that the fashion world is rediscovering boldface models, who, naturally, have to have a few years under her belt to become famous.
